On 22 December 2022, our multi-purpose dry cargo vessel ‘Baltic Crystal’ was launched at Shipyard Ferus Smit B.V. in Westerbroek, Netherlands. Godmother Mira Olausson performed the naming ceremony on site in Westerbroek.
Baltic Crystal and her sister vessel Nordic Crystal (delivered in May 2022) are both a further evolvement of Erik Thun’s existing fleet. Erik Thun Group has a proud history of designing and developing energy efficient vessels and our goal is that every new vessel shall be more efficient than the last one.
The sister vessels are built to the absolute latest design, meeting and often exceeding existing and forthcoming regulations. Reduced fuel consumption, an increased cargo intake, less exhaust emissions and lowered noise levels are a few examples of their trademarks. The new-buildings are equipped with a frequency converter for versatile shore power connection and a dynamic drive system. Find out more in our press release.
Erik Thun Group is part of both the global initiative Orange Day as well as the local initiative Enough is Enough, aiming to eliminate (domestic) violence against women and children.
Erik Thun Group was appointed an award for sustainable development from the Municipality of Lidköping at the end of last year. Early on, we decided to pay it forward to emphasis that sustainability is important also in our daily relationships, and to acknowledge that human rights are never to be taken for granted.
By contributing to the work of our local women’s shelter in providing help to women and children in need, we also want to raise awareness in our community, says Henrik & Johan Källsson at Erik Thun when handing over the gift of 20 000 SEK to Petra, manager at the local women’s shelter Kvinnojouren Linnéan in Lidköping. ”We have always had a high focus on resource efficiency translating into modern environmental care. It is a challenge to build vessels fit for the future but our long experience in the business paired with our vision to be a sustainable Swedish partner over generations, gives us a good basis for continual improvement and innovative design, says Henrik Källsson, Deputy Managing Director at Erik Thun AB.
Thun Tankers orders two resource efficient tankers
Thun Tankers have placed an order for two 7,999 mts dwt tankers. The ordered “R-Class” vessels are a further development of Thuns’ existing vessels. Focus on resource efficiency, environmental responsibility and logistical reliability has been key in the design process.
Thun Tankers is part of the Erik Thun Group, a company owned by the Källsson family since 1938. The ships, that will be built by Scheepswerf Ferus Smit BV in the Netherlands, will be delivered during first half 2024. Ferus Smit BV has previously built forty ships for Erik Thun. Upon delivery they will enter into the Gothia Tanker Alliance network and be technically managed by MF Shipping Group. Adaptive propulsion to minimize energy usage, UPS battery pack, the latest hull design and the newest and most resource efficient machinery are some examples of the vessels new features.
Erik Thun AB has published its Sustainability report for 2021. The Sustainability report is a way to describe the economic, environmental and social impacts of our everyday activities, as a complement to the annual report.
Our vision is to be a sustainable Swedish partner over generations. Being in the shipping industry, we believe we can actually make a difference in the global perspective by being responsible and do our part.
Finding sustainable alternatives and moving to carbon neutral fuels is still a challenge, but we are determined to keep building, maintaining and operating vessels with the latest designs and the lowest possible environmental impact.
