Thun Tankers launched “Thun Renew” – a vessel built for a sustainable future
Leer, Germany – October 17, 2025
Erik Thun Group has launched Thun Renew, the third out of eight vessels in its innovative R-Class series, at Ferus Smit Shipyard in Leer, Germany. Continuing the legacy of Thun Resource and Thun Reliance, the R-Class stands for “Resource Efficiency”-vessels designed to combine top-tier performance with sustainability, reliability, and care for the people working onboard.
Built in Europe, Thun Renew embodies the Group’s long-term vision: to invest in quality, efficiency and design choices that stand strong for decades.
“We always plan and design for the vessel’s full lifespan. By taking the best, leading and most sustainable investment decisions available today, we make sure the R-Class remains relevant for more than 20 years of operation,” said Joakim Lund, Chief Commercial Officer at Thun Tankers.
A vessel built with people and planet in mind
Beyond its fuel efficiency and low emissions, the R-Class concept brings sustainability to life through simplicity, functionality, and reliability. Every aspect, from the hull design to onboard systems, is built to minimise environmental impact while maximising cargo.
Crew welfare has also been central to the design philosophy. The Thun Renew offers safer, healthier, and more rewarding working conditions, supporting a modern maritime lifestyle that reflects Erik Thun Group’s Scandinavian values and focus on long-term partnerships with both customers and employees.
“A vessel is a real success when it can help our clients grow their business while simultaneously reducing their climate footprint,” said Johan Källsson, Managing Director at Erik Thun Group. “That’s the balance we’ve achieved with the R-Class. Efficiency without compromise.”
European-built reliability in an uncertain world
At a time when global logistics face rising geopolitical challenges, Thun Tankers continues to build its fleet close to home.
“By building in Europe, we ensure high quality, reliability and sustainability, with a ship delivered in direct proximity to our market,” Lund added. “It’s a strategic choice that gives both us and our clients confidence in a changing world.”
A name with meaning: Thun Renew
The vessel’s godmother, Marga de Mol, christened the ship Thun Renew, a name that captures the Group’s commitment to continuous improvement and responsibility across generations.
“Resource, Reliance and Renew, these names represent the values we live by,” said Lund. “They reflect how we see our role in the industry: resource-efficient, reliable and always ready to renew for the future.”
With Thun Renew, Erik Thun Group once again demonstrates that real sustainability in shipping is not just about technology – it’s about foresight, quality and care for people.
